SAILING
IN THE CYCLADES ISLANDS: |
Syros
island is the capital island of
the cyclades complex with more than
15000 citizens. It is the centre
of cyclades administration, shipping
routes and commerce. It is also
a very popular sailing destination.
Tourists prefer as yacht charter
bases Hermoupolis and Finikas or
Varis and Delfino. Nearby is also
a smaller island called Gaidaros
(Donkey) that has an excellent anchorage
as well.
|
|
The
capital city Hermoupolis took its
name after Hermes the Messenger
God. The island flowrished after
1821 when a large number of refugees
from other islands created a major
port that would service shipping
routes between islands in the Aegean,
Asia minor and Europe. Hermoupolis
became a trading point and one of
the largest ports of Greece after
Pireus, Thessalonika, Patras and
Heraclion.
Syros is a hilly island with just
a few nice beaches but a lot point
to go sailing. |
The
spacious square with the palm
trees, the imposing town hall,
the cultural center, the museum,
the municipal theater, the
historical monuments and the
scenic quarters are the main
sightseeing of this magnificent
town. Touring around the island
of Syros you will come across
numerous settlements of unique
natural beauty, special traditional
picturesqueness and hospitable
insular mentality, which are
spread all around embellishing
the already amazing landscape.
Possidonia
Homer mentions the existence
of two towns in Syros. One
of them was located in the
area of Possidonia - Finikas.
It was the older of the two,
was early destroyed and it
has also been considered as
a Phoenician colony
The specific location of this
town is defined by the remaining
of constructions, graces,
ancient objects and a necropolis
of the Prehistoric era.

Sailing
in Mykonos island
Although
Mykonos is a bare rocky island it
is one of the most famous islands
of the world and a popular yacht
charter destination. Due to its
soil and luck of water agriculture
is not developed. What is so special
about Mykonos is the nightlife and
the beautiful beaches.
|
|
The
port of Mykonos is expanding so
now you can hire charter yachts
as well. The largest town is Mykonos,
also known as Hora, on the west
coast. It is believed that the
island was named after a local
hero, who is considered an offspring
of god Apollo and was worship
locally.
In
Greek mythology Mykonos was the
location of the battle between
Zeus and the Gigantes
|
and
the island was named in honor
of Apollo's grandson Mykons.
During
these ancient times, Mykonos,
due to its proximity to the
then highly populated island
of Delos (situated about 2km
away), became very important
as a supply island and possibly
as a getaway location for
Delian citizens.
Officially
it is forbidden for yachts
to anchor to Delos after 15:00
when the exhibitions close,
however a lot of people do.

Sailing
in Naxos island
Naxos
is the largest island of the Cyclades
complex with a lot large cities
compared to other islands of the
cyclades complex. It is a popular
tourist destination with a lot of
beautiful beaches like Agios georgios
and Filoti. Homer mentions "Dia";
literally the sacred island "of
the Goddess". Karl Kerenyi,
speaking for the ancient Greeks,
explains:
|
|
"This
name, Dia, which means 'heavenly'
or 'divine', was applied to several
small craggy islands in our [ Aegean
] sea, all of them lying close to
larger islands, such as Crete or
Naxos. The name "Dia"
was even transferred to the island
of Naxos itself, since it was more
widely supposed than any other to
have been the nuptial isle of Dionysus.".
|
The
island offers a lot of advantages
for sailing holidays
like perfect climate,
a wide variety of natural
beauty and sandy anchorages.
Note
that during the high season
it will be very difficult
to find accommodation if you
are planning on visiting the
